What Is Stomping Out?

​

Stomping Out” is an annual High School Step Show Competition and Resource Fair geared towards High school aged youth. The purpose of the event is for the community to surround the youth with resources and knowledge while supporting the youth as they creatively teach their peers about health promotion and disease prevention specific to health issues affecting their age group. The national Youth Risk Behavioral Survey (YRBS) has identified health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading cause of death, disability and social problems among youth. These behaviors include:

• Unhealthy dietary behaviors

• Inadequate physical activity

• Tobacco use

• Alcohol and other drug use

• Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

• Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV infections

 

This peer-led culturally sensitive initiative will provide information targeting these behaviors for the intended population and increase heath promotion among this population. The 2019 theme is Stomping Out Mental Health Stigma, however in subsequent years the theme can change to specifically address a different epidemics.

 

Objective:

• Increase health awareness among adolescents by providing health screenings, activities, materials, demonstrations, and information regarding acute and chronic conditions affecting youth ages 13 to 18

• Increase self efficacy among youth to make positive health choices and to develop health behaviors that are essential for healthy adults

• Surround youth with community resources in and around the City of Detroit that will promote not only health awareness, but awareness of other educational, cultural and developmental resources
